Microsoft Edge for Android has recently added preliminary support for extensions in its latest version, bringing it in line with its desktop counterpart. This new feature was discovered by the well-known leaker, Leopeva64, in the Canary Channel preview builds. Now, users can easily download and install extensions directly within the browser.
The Extensions Beta page offers popular Chrome-based extensions such as Dark Reader, Global Speed, and uBlock Origin. With this update, Edge users on mobile can enjoy the same level of customization and productivity tools available on the desktop version, including ad blockers and tracker blocking.
Although the feature is currently hidden in the Edge Canary version 123 beta channel, it is expected to be released to beta testers by the end of February. Interested users can get a head start by downloading the Canary version from the Google Play Store. This move gives Edge an early advantage over Chrome on mobile, as Chrome lacks official extension support. If implemented smoothly, it might even prompt Google to consider opening up Chrome to extensions on Android. However, there have been no official announcements from Google regarding such plans.
In addition to extension support, Microsoft Edge for Android and iOS has undergone a name change and is now referred to as “Microsoft Edge: AI browser.” This change highlights Microsoft’s focus on artificial intelligence in its browser.
Meanwhile, Microsoft has released Edge version 122.0.2365.3 in the Dev Channel, which introduces a translate icon in the PDF toolbar and a “New” badge in the context menu to highlight recently added features. The update also includes various fixes and minor improvements across the browser.
